According to HL website, someone (or more likely some organisation) bought £19,637,546.13 worth of NG shares at 16.35 today. That was 2410994 shares. As the trade was priced at 814.50p HL assumed it was a purchase.

Remember "Never Sell Glaxo", the love affair with Hanson and ICI, or the Nifty Fifty?

Personally I'm still waiting to get my money back on Coats Viyella and Marconi.

I agree with you about stupidly titled articles - harbingers of doom indeed - but of those you mention the only one I have any experience with is GSK.

I have held it (or its predecessors) for nearly 30 years now, and am sitting on an XIRR of 9.6%.

No miracle worker, but a satisfactory component of my holdings. I top-slice and top-up occasionally but have no intention (at the moment) of selling up.

Good luck with Marconi -:)!

Fair play although didn't most of that return in Glaxo happen in the first of those three decades? The share price looks pretty flat or down over the last 20 years. It peaked at 2288 in January 1999 and I am seeing 1550 today.

Thank God for the dividends, I guess.

Quite right. I had my shares as a consequence of my employment (with SmithKline & French rather than Glaxo) and wasn't an active investor back in 1999-2000. I do remember a big peak ('Irrational Exuberance'?) following the merger with Glaxo and these days, would almost certainly have made a substantial top-slice - or complete sale, but hey-ho - new job, other things to worry about... Sitting on it hasn't actually served me too badly - I might have put the money into a real dud.

Upon embarking on my active investing (as an HYPer initially) I did make top-ups at about 1200p back in 2008-2009, so have managed a bit of CG - as well as getting the decent dividends. Lucky timing. A share I don't worry too much about.

The London Stock Exchange describe that item as an Uncrossed Trade being the result of the closing auction. So neither a buy nor a sell in the sense you suggest:

Yes, that's correct. As I understand it, that is why the system was set up.

The HYP Practical board is used for the discussion of matters more tightly related to the stock within a HYP portfolio.

The Share News board is used for the discussion of broader issues related to the stock and also avoids posters taking HYP discussions off-topic.

I think tremendous credit should be given here, as I think it's the first time that I've read such a clear explanation of the intent from someone who's not involved with moderation.

Well done richfool - there's hope for us all yet!

Thank you for the thank you Itsallaguess.

Well that seems to be the theory of it, though in practice it tends to break down, as upon seeing an item of news, annual results, a report or update posted on the HYP Practical board, "all and sundry" tend to then be drawn in to comment on all aspects, rather than just the dividend or matters more strictly pertaining to their HYP. Thus the threads on the HYP Practical board then broaden out into all sorts of other aspects. That's why I now try and make any broader comments on this board.

And therein lies the problem. The difference is all too subtle for a chap like me and apparently many others. However I daresay if it keeps most happy.........

The subtlety eludes me as well. In addition, I feel sorry for idpickering as it must surely have increased the "voluntary work" level.

Agreement reached with the State of New York

National Grid has reached an agreement with the State of New York to immediately lift its natural gas moratorium for all customers in Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island for approximately the next two years. National Grid will therefore proceed to connect those customer applications put on hold due to the moratorium and start processing all new applications.

This agreement also provides the necessary framework for resolving the longer-term energy supply issues. Within three months, National Grid has committed to present options to meet New York's long-term gas supply needs. Following a consultation process through a series of public meetings, final long-term options will be identified, that reflect the public input, and should be agreed with the State by June 2020. This will allow for safe and adequate construction of long-term options.

As part of this agreement, National Grid will offer $7 million in customer assistance to address hardships arising from the moratorium, invest $8 million in demand response and energy efficiency programs and make an additional $20 million investment in clean energy projects and clean tech business investments.

National Grid Submits Final RIIO-2 Business Plans

National Grid has today submitted its final business plans to Ofgem for its UK Electricity and Gas Transmission businesses, as well as the Electricity System Operator, for the 2021-2026 RIIO-2 period. These plans have been developed following extensive engagement with customers, industry stakeholders, non-domestic consumers and households across the country.

Our Electricity Transmission plan has a baseline totex spend of £7.1bn over the five years. It assumes connection of 15.3GW of customer capacity, providing the UK with clean power and flexible storage, as well as continued investment to maintain reliability and resilience. Our Gas Transmission plan has a baseline totex spend of £2.8bn over the five year plan. It assumes an increase in asset health and cyber related investment, as well as a programme of work needed to test and prove hydrogen conversion options. The baseline spend, under our financial framework, would see consumer bills reduced slightly in real terms for both Electricity and Gas Transmission.

Thanks. In comparison to the over complicated report from SSE yesterday, this report is very straight forward and they concentrate on statutory results, showing the underlying results alongside them. Very helpful and I think in the circumstances quite good. Furthermore they are increasing the dividend again.

Thanks for that Dod. There was chat about my perhaps buying more NG. rather than topping up my SSE holdings. It was because I've already spent my current maximum spend on any given share that I didn't go for NG.

I am pleased to say I also hold NG. Looking (hopefully some distance) ahead, however, I wonder what Starmer's stance would be as regards nationalising the utilities. I can't help thinking that Kool Kier would not have much difficulty in winning back those Labour votes switched to Blustering Boris in the last election so, as I have a fair bit in utilities, I won't be rushing to crystallise other losses to buy more, much as I should like the dividends, until I see which way the wind is blowing. Unfortunately, it seems to change direction every day.

National Grid is the only utility I hold and I am happy about that. Since it controls the electricity network in England anyway, I should think that Kool Keith will be quite careful about it and in any case only the Marxist Corbyn has ever mentioned nationalisation in a recent Labour manifesto and a General Election is 4 1/2 years away.

In theory, but can you guarantee this govt. won't be brought down before then?

Well I do not want to get into politics but it seems doubtful with the majority they have but that is not to say that they might not oust Boris. In any case, as I said, I doubt that nationalisation of National Grid is going to be high on the next manifesto of the Labour Party. There will be a lot of other problems to deal with I imagine. Could be wrong of course but for now I will take my chances.
