An upcoming auction for seven UK offshore wind projects is set to flop, according to industry sources.

The results are due to be announced on Friday, but the number of bids will be close to zero, or none at all, the sources said.

Offshore wind developers have been saying the price set by the government for the electricity they will generate is too low to make projects viable.

The government said it was committed to increasing the use of renewable energy.

Energy firm SSE and Swedish firm Vattenfall have already ruled themselves out of the bidding, saying that the government had failed to allow for sharp rises in the cost of steel and labour when setting the electricity price.

Industry sources have told the BBC that if big, experienced and well-financed firms cannot make the sums work, it is unlikely that others will be able to.

Under its wind power auctions, the government sets an electricity price which bidders compete to come in at or below.

This arrangement is called a Contract for Difference (CFD). If electricity prices in the future rise above that level, the companies pay the excess back to the Treasury, if they fall below it the Treasury pays the company the difference.

The £44 per megawatt hour price floor set for this auction fails to take account of development costs, according to industry insiders. They have been warning for some time that steel prices and wage rises had pushed their costs up by between 20% and 40% since the last auction was held at a similar price target.

Electricity generators were also hit with a windfall tax on profits from older projects that pre-dated the Contract for Difference regime. SSE warned at the time that the tax would cause it to review future investment plans.

I'm not sure how this will affect UKW, which I hold, directly, but it's a matter of concern surely?

Ian.

I do not know a lot about all this but as a modest holder of Greencoat I am quite relaxed because it is involved with existing windfarms on long term contracts. Government is trying to be clever in keeping the price of the product down but if no one takes up these contracts they will have to revise the price up next time. In fact it may even help Greencoat because they hold a lot of already constructed windfarms which will presumably become a bit more valuable if anything.

Capital Allocation Update.

Increase in Annual Dividend & Commencement of Share Buyback Programme.

Greencoat UK Wind PLC (the "Company" or "UKW"), the leading listed renewable infrastructure fund, invested in UK wind farms, today announces an increase in its annual dividend target to 10p and the launch of a share buyback programme of up to £100 million (the "Programme").

Background

From admission to the London Stock Exchange on 27 March 2013 to 30 September 2023, the Company has generated £1,764 million of cash flow, paid £887 million of dividends and reinvested £877 million of excess cash generation. The Company has increased its dividend in line with RPI every year and additional funds generated have been reinvested in UK wind power assets to drive NAV growth above RPI, with UKW now delivering net returns to investors of 10%, assuming shares purchased at NAV.

The Company is very well capitalised enabling UKW to benefit from its market leading position, as evidenced by the Company's recent investment in the London Array offshore wind farm.

In line with UKW's capital allocation policy, which is regularly reviewed by the Board, the Company always considers a range of options to optimise shareholder returns from its leading market position. Given continued operational strength, which the Board and Manager believe is not reflected in the current share price, the Company is launching a share buyback programme of up to £100 million and increasing the annual dividend target to 10 pence per share.

Increase in Annual Dividend

As a consequence of the Company's prospects, strong balance sheet and cash flow generation, the Board has determined it will increase its annual dividend target to 10 pence share for the 2024 financial year, an increase of 14.2% over the 2023 target dividend of 8.76p. This increase is significantly higher than forecast December 2023 RPI inflation.

In recognition of the very strong cash flow delivered by the business through 2023 to date, the Board also has decided to pay a 3.43 pence per share dividend for Q4 2023 increasing the 2023 full year dividend target to 10 pence per share.

Since listing, the Company's aggregate dividend cover has been 2.0x and the average dividend cover is projected to remain strong over the long term, whilst also remaining robust in the face of a range of extreme downside power price sensitivities. The Board expects that future dividends will continue to be increased in line with RPI, as has been the policy since IPO.

As I commented on the HYP Board, this is good news. Instead of raising capital likemost such companies, this company is h as n do I guess it back and a nice increase in the dividend.

A garbled message but of course I meant that I have never seen these companies doing a share buyback!
