Today is Candlemas. We have a saying in Scotland

If Candlemas Day be bright and fair half the winter's to come and mair,
If Candlemas Day be dark and foul half the winter was gone at Yule.

The sky is very clear here at the moment and the forecast is very good for today, so you know what to expect,

That's Scottish for you.

Fair rhymes with more, but Walt Disney.

Well I should have used the Scots vernacular. Instead of 'foul' I should spelt it 'fool' but that would have caused complications and confusion with the title of these esteemed Boards.

Anyway the forecast was right for once, and I am taking advantage of it by giving my house a good midwinter airing. All my windows are wide open and it feels great to have real fresh air throughout the house instead of a sort of warm fug.

But as my auld mither used to say 'We'll pay for this!'

I have heard it as:

If Candlemass be fair and clear,
There’ll be twa winters in the year

So that’s us stuffed, then.

Not for the first time the saying I quoted at Candlemas has proved to be only too correct, this time with the arrival of the 'Beast from the East', We have had more snow in the last 48 hours (in Western Perthshire) than we have had for the last several years. This morning I suppose getting on for a foot and no sign of any let up.

Pretty much the same here about 4 miles from Glasgow Airport. I cleared up about 6in yesterday morning, then another 3in in the evening and we've had another 3-4in overnight, and it's snowing again just now. A young fox cub was pretty confused by it all last night and seemed rather frightened of the falling snow. And a wee mouse was really struggling through the snow to get at the bird seed about 30min ago.

Never seen snow like it here, remarkably dry and powdery. It's usually wet soggy stuff.
