Earth, reflected off the side of a Cherry Red Tesla Roadster that left our planet last night, and is currently heading towards the Asteroid belt -

It's one thing to launch a rocket capable of carrying twice the current maximum load, but to do it with such humour is something else.

More power to his elbow, I say....

Cheers,

sad about the central core but the landing and reuse of the side boosters makes the biggest difference. it was really impressive.

That was brilliant wasn't it? Like Thunderbirds but real and stringless.

It is really that which is the iconic photo rather than the car going off to the asteroid belt although the thought behind the payload is good. I did see it sort of live on live stream (which I would assume was about 30 seconds behind live).

"Tripping balls here..."

It seems the main core missed the drone platform by 100m and hit the sea at around 300mph - I guess, to paraphrase Edison, they've just discovered another way not to land a rocket!

Meanwhile back in Tesla land, are the results cause for optimism?

If it was travelling at 300mph it is probably intentional that it missed the drone ship.

The central core failed to land because it had insufficient propellant to reduce velocity to landing speed, so yes, they would have parked it elsewhere!

This is a known problem and they lost several Falcon 9 drone ship landings this way.

Nothing to see here, move along!

These private space companies are showing how outdated and wasteful the government programmes are. Compare the attitude when a rocket fails - for the government efforts it's a time of shame and recrimination, whereas for the privateers it's just another opportunity to learn and refine their process.

Not forgetting, of course, that the private companies stand on the shoulders of government-sponsored giants, as I'm sure they'd be the first to admit.

Scary to think of the idiocies of nationalism being exported beyond the bounds of the earth - that picture of the missile launcher in space may have been a joke, but the militarisation of space certainly isn't.
Skimming through the YouTube comments after the press conference (I know, always a bad idea  ) there were actually flat-earthers who, er, flat-out didn't believe it happened, and apparently Russian trolls giving it the thumbs down. Makes one wonder...

If rethinking how we should live life on a new planet is your thing, look no further than Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy (Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars).

Check out his Wikipedia entry https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kim_Stanley_Robinson where:

"Scientists as heroes

Robinson's work often features scientists as heroes. They are portrayed in a mundane way compared to most work featuring scientists: rather than being adventurers or action heroes, Robinson's scientists become critically important because of research discoveries, networking and collaboration with other scientists, political lobbying, or becoming public figures. Robinson captures the joy of scientists as they work at something they care about.[7] The Mars trilogy and The Years of Rice and Salt rely heavily on the idea that scientists must take responsibility for ensuring public understanding and responsible use of their discoveries. Robinson's scientists often emerge as the best people to direct public policy on important environmental and technological questions, of which politicians are often ignorant."

Elon kind of fits the bill.

Well worth a read.

KSR sounds interesting - had never heard of him!

Here is an "infographic" from RS Components no less giving an overview of Musk's current investments: https://uk.rs-online.com/web/generalDis ... usk-empire

And to think not so long ago I accused him on this thread of being a serial under-deliverer
On the subject of previous posts, this from Bloomberg about massive increase in battery manufacturing led by China, which can only be a good thing for Tesla: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles ... -batteries

Nevertheless still hoping TSLA will fall further and present a buying opportunity...

Here's an interesting video on the Youtube about the BFR (Big F* Rocket) which is the next Spacex spacecraft and likely the vehicle which will actually have the capacity to take a large number of people\equipment to Mars:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mg0BB2bCDPo&t=701s

There's an interesting graphic towards the end of the presentation showing how it will be cheaper, presumably on a pound to orbit basis, than all the other current heavy lifters.

Meantime there's Jeff Bezos with Blue Origin 'I just sell off another billion's worth of Amazon stock each year to fund it' which appears to be at least as game-changing as Spacex. Blue Origin are developing large scale methane\oxygen powered engines which are IMO at least as innovative as anything Spacex has developed, but less obviously exciting. A Space Race v.2 has begun but amongst US companies instead of US v USSR. Exciting times for space buffs!

Tsla stock now closing on the bottom of the last trading range, from February of 2017.

If the stock is going to be any good it ought to stay within this trading range.

Yet another industry Musk is disrupting... I am beginning to get nervous that some thug somewhere will get fed up with their agenda being trashed by Musk and might decide to do something about it that, er, doesn't fall within the purview of acceptable conduct. I hope he has good private security - he's too important to lose.

It would be great to see him do a NeXT - get swallowed up by Apple and emerge with all the resources of that titan at his disposal to lead it to even better things.

California allows cars with no human drivers:

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/26/tech ... rules.html

This is the beginning of the robotics revolution that will touch all aspects of human society in ways that are unpredictable, it likely greatly significant for all humans.

And just as a slight counter to the general tone of postings on here.

Tesla did no autonomous driving tests in California last year, probably because when they did they were reporting human interventions per mile that were orders of magnitude worse than other vendors:-

https://electrek.co/2018/01/31/tesla-au ... ving-test/

And also:-
