When I was a young man, I started a business and it did rather well.
Was I clever, hard working or just lucky? Personally, I believe all three.
I was lucky enough to be presented with an opportunity. Intelligent enough to recognise it. Diligent enough to make it pay.
It was a business of it's time. I saw the way the wind was blowing and did something before anyone else. I saw the future, or thought I did. Maybe I just happened to be right. Maybe I latched onto the Zeitgeist. Either way, I am eternally grateful to my younger self.
And my business did better and better for quite some years.
And I believe that from time to time fund managers can do similarly.
Problem is, can you spot which fund manager and when? Which kid would you have backed from the Class of '88?
Would you have picked me? Because I'm not sure that I would have.

The linked article lists managers who have bettered 10% compound annual growth, can I add myself to the lucky list ?
My return has been a shade under 12% compounded since 1990, in the first years I thought I was smart, as the years rolled on I have dissuaded myself from that opinion and largely adopted index trackers, as I realise I have no ‘edge’ whatsoever, I do have security of tenure though and can tolerate volatility, cheap index funds and minimal portfolio activity do the rest !

I'd settle for that. It's more than most fund managers achieve!
Best wishes
Mark.
