I think UncleIan's point was not to bet on them doing the same this time around.

I know that I am ancient, but I was at a Round Table area meeting at Bramhall Club that night, and the match was on in an adjacent room.
I recall that we adjourned to the Queen of Clubs in Manchester on the way home. Half a crown a go on the roulette table.

Nobody has mentioned who they think will win................so lets start this off.
I'm going for Brazil..after their humiliation last time against Germany they have something to prove...
An outsider would be Belgium. Some good players, a few of course we know all about. Could Portugal pull something out of the bag, after all, they have Ronaldo

I remember 1966. Those were the days when we actually went for goal and took shots from 30 yards out as opposed to prattling about in our own half.....would be more interested if Gareth Bale wasn't Welsh and played for us, might of stood a vague chance of getting somewhere...............however Rashford with more confidence has this ability but over so many years cannot stand watching us play....could 2018 be different, hope so but doubt it.

Russia @40/1
Home team.easy group and which way will refs be awarding penalties??
Not saying they will win but an e/w bet at those odds is worth a nibble.
Anyway I'm in for a fiver.

It's a shame that there is no UK team like we have in the Olympics. Maybe Bale would be the only non-English player but he would be our best player.
And might we have won the WC or Euros at least once since 1966 if Law, Sir Kenny, Rush, Best or Souness could have played?
No, you're right, we'd still have been crap.

We'll I'm one of the few .
Unfortunately I was in retail , (working in the very first out of town hypermarket in the country) .
The management thought it would be a good idea to fill the community room with a bank of large screen (at the time) TVs for shoppers to go and watch the match in-between shopping . It was quite an operation to get them all working .
In the event there were no shoppers ! The 80,000 sq.ft shop was bereft of any visitors. The only ones viewing were members of staff sneaking up to have a geek whilst on a "toilet break".

Will they even qualify from the group stage, with Suarez+Uruguay and Salah+Egypt in their group?
Maybe that's reflected in the long odds?

Is this Word cup sponsored by Scrabble? If so, Brazil might score relatively highly amongst the favourites.

Re: The World Cup 2018 general pub chat thread.
Well it is at times like this that I thank destiny that I had one Scottish and one English parent, if I had been solely Scottish I would have been sitting on the touchline as a mere observer, this way I have two chances of qualifying (well 1.25 these days) and England gives me the opportunity to experience the disappointment I had become used to with Scotland.
It seems really surprising that a household in Edinburgh is more up for the World Cup than most on here, we have the magazines, the sticker book, the wallchart and my daughter has already checked her work schedule re which games she will miss whilst my son keeps dropping useful information about the "Arabian Messi" and weird and wonderful player stats (I blame football manager)
Still on the fence re the eventual winner, have it down to West Germany, Spain, Brazil and Belgium; so that means it will be France.
We also run the World Cup betting syndicate in the house, each player starts with £20 (four of us) in a betting account, winner is he or she who increases it the most (or loses the least), all final balances to be pooled for a meal out or a bag of shared chips (depending on our skills)
My prediction is England will scrape out of group, lurch through next round, go down in quarter final, so with my track record that is them failing to get out of group or reaching the final.

Re: The World Cup 2018 general pub chat thread.
Spain to win it?
Spain sacked head coach Julen Lopetegui after he was named the new Real Madrid boss - two days before their opening World Cup match against Portugal.
Real Madrid announced on Tuesday that Lopetegui would succeed Zinedine Zidane at the Bernabeu on a three-year-deal.
The Spanish football federation (RFEF) said it had dismissed the 51-year-old because the negotiation occurred "without any information to the RFEF".
The World Cup in Russia starts on Thursday.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/44467548
It did look like a really poor decision to announce the Real Madrid job this side of the WC finals...
I imagine it made the team-talks with the Barcelona players a little, erm, awkward to say the least...
Cheers,
Itsallaguess

Re: The World Cup 2018 general pub chat thread.
What a Joke.............2026 venue...its Mexico..............................well some of it..................
Its Canada............................well some of it......................
Actually its USA......................most of it..........
Wonder if the Mexican Wall will have been built by then plus crippling trade wars with Canada at the same time....or will Trump do what only Putin can do and that is to elect himself for a third time to see it all through and have the finals at Mar A Lago with North Korea qualifying and Kim Jong-un in goal for their team.
Morocco didn't stand a chance. Think US offered 11 billion to FiFa. Mind you with 48 teams allowed I think, will be quite a spectacle.
First things first....we kick off in Russia tomorrow.....
p.s. The so called disgraced ex president. Sepp Blatter, is a personal guest of Mr. Putin. (wonder why?)

Why do they have these tournaments in the cricket season? Leslie Compton would never have stood for it.
