Late '98 or thereabouts I think.

The problem here, if one exists, is the dearth of drunken posts. This being one of them.

Lost my humour when Fool died.

I think it is inevitable that the Fool and the Fool will be different because of the look-and-feel of the software, the new moderation crew, and the subset of Fools, but it is an evolving thing that I'm sure can be the home for us that it always was. C.x

I first posted on TMF in 1999, and the records on the boards went back some years before that.

I didn't have time to explore the non financial boards, which were myriad. The HYP boards occupied more than enough time, although the company specific boards are something I miss.

It's the members who make the boards what they are, and Snorvey is trying hard. Politics and religion always seems to be a recipe for controversy, but some Remainers appear to have had their sense of humour surgically or referendumally removed. I always wonder where the army is when you really need them.

I never said I didn't regain it. My post was Foolishly playing around with being drunk, whilst replying, and that old dirge about "The day the music died".

I've always meant to ask but what are your ...............s about? Sticky keyboard or a lack of a functioning comma? ;)

I think this was the first post at TMF USA http://boards.fool.com/the-continuing-s ... 00000.aspx. Since deleted but dated April Fools' Day 1997. This binary post 10000001 http://boards.fool.com/hiya-nick-10000001.aspx seems to be the first one where the content is showing, also dated April Fools' Day 1997. As TJH has suggested, the Fool existed before then and the copyright notice at the foot over there shows:

© 1995 - 2018 The Motley Fool.

Wikipedia says Fool was founded in July 1993.

I gotta admit my take up and contributions have been a little slow.... but it's building... I think....

One problem I guess is the Fool had an angle that got people in... i.e. the fool articles and mantra's... this is more standalone and organic.... maybe...

It does seem odd not having the 'host' site above/around the boards, as there was some cross pollination
Perhaps we need to start our own public site. Investors Exchange perhaps?
investorsexchange.com might get a few hits....

There's been plenty of discussion on this over at the "Biscuit Bar", here's Clariman's take on the subject over there viewtopic.php?p=74381#p74381

I haven't read the thread again but the first line of defence in a potential defamation case would be to delete the offending post(s). Additionally, the posters themselves would be in the frame, just as much as the administrators/site owners, or something along those lines.

Anyway, more over there on the subject should it be of interest.

Yes, zeddust. We also discussed other matters as over here (again at the Biscuit Bar):

Spot my deliberate error over there. I promoted Eady to Lord Justice.

Late '98 or thereabouts I think.

Maybe a little earlier than that. From memory I joined TMF in October of 1998 and had the sense it had been going for a while. I know Pyad was around then as we had some fights (inevitably).

I corrected myself later in the thread, in so far as the TMF USA discussion boards were concerned. First post over there 1 April 1997.

We used to know when the first TMF UK post was, as that was a fairly regular question. Maybe its available via the waybackmachine.

Edit: I've since found this captured December 1998 https://web.archive.org/web/19981212012 ... .co.uk:80/ which includes not much more than Ask A Foolish Question A great place for new Fools to start. but there's also a mention of November 1997 in the top banner

I believe the boards dated back to 1998. I did some digging on that when they closed them. Some of you may be remembering the US Fool, which pre-dated the UK one.

It used to run on Microsoft-based server platform, which was itself pretty new in 1998. Which probably helps explain how and why they found themselves lumbered with something that could neither be upgraded nor maintained: this was a platform sold by sharp suits but avoided like the plague by techies.

I think the vitality at TMF was aided by a regular trickle of new folks, who first came to the site for the articles then made the transition: that's certainly how I arrived. Folks who have been with a community a long time often tend to find they've said most of what they want to say, and become less engaged. A community with insufficient new blood goes stale. The OP here is perhaps experiencing an element of personal staleness - a "seen it all before" syndrome - together with the lower inflow of new blood in a forum not directly fed by TMF editorial.

See the post immediately before yours.

Indeed. I think I found the old Fool by wondering why there was a Jester's Hat next to comments below my Yahoo Finance portfolio holding in ASK.

Anyone looking for the TMF UK discussion boards, if they knew of them, might end up at Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Motle ... ion_boards:

On Thursday 3 November 2016 it was announced that the UK boards would close, with a post stating "It's my sad duty to announce that we'll be closing the Fool UK Discussion Boards to new posts on Thursday 17 November. After they close to new posts, the Boards will remain accessible as a 'read-only' archive for at least 3 months."[23] Several Fools have suggested alternative sites including lemonfool.co.uk.[24][citation needed] …

Yes but not a full day later, posts numbered 2 and 3:

viewtopic.php?f=14&t=2&p=2#p2
viewtopic.php?f=21&t=3&p=14#top

I can't recall what happened to the post numbered 1. I think you and I chatted about it elsewhere on here.

The TMF snug was open to all topics. And does it matter if a post goes off topic here? I think the snug needs an element of serious discussion to contrast the usual 'banter'. I think the rule of 'criticise the post not the poster' should remain but robust debating should not be banned.

That said I am grateful to those who built the LF and keep it afloat.

Well, this board is stated to be "A virtual pub for off topic, light hearted pub related banter and discussion. No trainers" in the board list. So anything that isn't light hearted pub related banter and discussion is off-topic... But then again, anything that is light hearted pub related banter and discussion is on-topic if it's off-topic, and off-topic if it's on-topic! ;-)
