Handkerchiefs

#158315

Postby Rhyd6 » August 9th, 2018, 6:38 pm

At our weekly stich and bitch session we were discussing handerchiefs and whether or not people still use the cotton variety. The result was women no but most said that their hubbies still do. Now none of us are in the first flush of youth so I wondered if this is an age thing. Does anyone in the pub still use a cotton hanky or have you changed to disposable paper ones?

I've had to cast about for alternatives since I stopped buying a newspaper regularly.

Yeah, I use them.

They're a minor luxury of middle age and affluence. In my youth I'd just use whatever was to hand.

And they're useful to have to hand. A few weeks ago I had a minor accident resulting in scalding to the back of my hand. Nothing serious, but definitely not a good idea to expose to direct sunlight. A handkerchief to tie round the hand offering some protection was a lifesaver!

Always used cotton hankies and I'm in my second flush of youth (= dangerously close to 70). Wife uses paper ones, which I hate when she leaves one in clothes in the washing machine.

Another cotton hanky user holding out against the trend. It's clear we're a dying breed.

The wife and children all use tissues exclusively.

Another cotton hankies user. Guess it stems from many years ago, in my youth, getting them regularly as Christmas present from my gran!

I use paper ones - mainly because I cannot stomach the thought of snot and etc in my washing machine with my clothes, it's gross.

So I assume you also wear paper disposable knickers, mel? ;)
Or (gulp!) you never wash your knickers?

I have some cotton handkerchiefs, including one inherited from my father-in-law some 40 or so years ago. I also have some polyester ones, which I use on informal occasions.

I should add that ironing them is my job, and obviously the polyester ones are easier in that respect.

On occasion a piece of kitchen roll has to suffice, but a lot less comfortable. There is also a small packet of tissues in one jacket pocket, of some antiquity, bought when I arrived at the paper shop with a runny nose and no handkerchief.

Absolutely still do. All are past their best, but unless they develop holes, negating the ability to 'catch' then they are used ad infinitum or until a family member requires one for a use that would make me think twice about blowing my nose on it again, in which case they are binned. Don't ask.

As far as I'm aware, no-one else here uses cotton ones.

Stash of paper ones in the car - the ones that come in 5s or 6s in a plastic pack. Fair game for the whole family and prevents my cotton one being nicked / sacrificed (any more) when travelling.....

Along with Terry, I do the ironing and leave hankies to last as an easy 'treat' to finish after ploughing through tops of different shapes / with knots / wax transfers et al.

Who needs either? Close off one nostril then blow hard. Repeat with the other nostril. Then take a shower....

I don't know what goes on in your pants but there is no snot or bogies in my knickers.

I've been using cotton handkerchieves for nearly 30 years, much to the amusement/annoyance of housemates and girlfriends every since!

Hankies, for decades.

And I'm only 48.

Does that make me a throwback? ;)

My wife rinses the washing machine through after my hankies are washed! It's called snot or bogies, but apparently washerlurkers is fair game too.

My hankies are put separately into a boil wash load - but its still a bone of contention after 49 years of wedded bliss.

Oh, so gross! Bogies floating in saucepans! I hope you use a dedicated pan and not one you use for pasta on other nights!

I use both paper and cotton.

Paper for blowing my nose etc. cotton almost exclusively for cleaning my glasses, it also helps to keep coins in my pocket when I sit down.
