Domain name hosting
Hi all,
I have my own domain name which I have had happily hosted with the same company for some 20 years. My deal has the following features ordered from most to least useful to me:
1. Practically unlimited email routing of the form: <anything>@myhostname.com, where I can specify delivery/forwarding etc for each address.
2. Hosted POP or IMAP mailboxes with individual passwords for a small annual payment for each additional mailbox; total mail storage allowance of 1GB.
3. Configurable SPAM filtering on each hosted mailbox.
4. Extremely reliable servers with negligible downtime; excellent customer service; good comms; trouble free.
5. Additional 1GB of storage for web pages, ftp etc.
6. Online (web-based) interface to the mailboxes.
7. Both FTP and ssh/telnet access to the server. [not used often but occasionally a godsend -- for SSH tunnelling etc]
8. Decent control panel to change settings, set up filters etc.
The cost of the above and other features I don't use is about £90 per year.
I'm coming up to renewal date and wondering if I can get most of the above at a much lower price? Any recommendations? All for personal use, not business.

Re: Domain name hosting
If you get a cloud-based-server you administer yourself, you have all the capabilities you want and much more, but of course you have to do your own setup and admin. Cheapest I'm aware of is $5/month at https://www.linode.com/ .
If you want things set up for you, I can't help. Your existing deal sounds pretty decent if it meets your needs, except that charging extra for additional mailboxes seems quite a ripoff!

Recently switched to TSO. Really happy, good tech support, not much money.

Re: Domain name hosting
You might consider one of the bluehost packages
https://www.bluehost.com/
Something to be aware of on shared servers is that they can get spamblocked if someone on the shared space is being naughty. For that reason I put our hosting on a VPS with bluehost after a while, and have not encountered that problem since. I have had that issue on a number of other shared hosting sites before, i.e. it is not a bluehost-specific issue. If you go the VPS route then probably best to do it from the get-go.

A good point.
Some detailed information here on the various lists/mechanisms...https://www.rackaid.com/blog/email-blacklists/
Cont.Email blacklists are everywhere. There are so many of them, chances are your server’s IP address is listed on one of them right now. In fact, some of our own IPs are on some email blacklists as I write this. Am I worried? No.
Many email blacklists tools try to impress you with a long list DNS-Based Realtime Blacklists (DNSRBL). I’ve seen a few tools check nearly 100 lists.
However, there are only 8 email blacklists you really need to care about.

Re: Domain name hosting
Thank you all, some great pointers there. Looks like I could save about £50 a year, have to work out if it's worth the hassle, especially as I have been very happy with current provider. Perhaps I can wangle a discount out of them...

Agree that TSO has prompt technical support and rarely needed here.
Also saving for the first year via topcashback and a TSO discount for new customers.

Re: Domain name hosting
I switched most of my websites from tsoHost to Zen early last year because tsoHost wanted to move my accounts from their own hosting service to GoDaddy's* cPanel-based service. This prohibits use of outgoing email (e.g. from a website Contact form) being sent from anything but their localhost email servers: you cannot send outgoing mail direct to Gmail or MSFT 365 Exchange, and this matters if you want to take advantage of the latter two’s specialised services (especially those of 365 Exchange). TsoHost does, however, allow SSH access (Zen doesn’t) and I retain tsoHost accounts for just those applications that need it, such as installs via PHP Composer.
tsoHost’s support is quite good; so is Zen's.
I use MSFT 365 for email; it ain’t cheap but is in my experience the Gold Standard.
* they are owned indirectly by GoDaddy
