Update Google Chrome - active exploit patched
Just a heads-up that Google have released a patch for Google Chrome that fixes a known 0-day exploit that's currently active.

Re: Update Google Chrome - active exploit patched
It is possible that you won't see "Update Google Chrome" when you click on the three bar symbol in the top right, if you're using Windows.
Instead go to "help" and then "about Google chrome". This should bring up a webpage with the version of chrome that you are running and a button to update it if needed.
On Android it should update through Google play store.
If you're like me and check for updates every day (or even several times a day), probably just after booting up, the chrome update appeared in the last few days (but the press have only just started writing about it) so you should already have it. But it's probably best to check now

Re: Update Google Chrome - active exploit patched
I have Chrome installed but mostly use EDGE now as it gets less adverts etc (well so it seems to me)
so will Chrome update itself and install its updates without me doing anything......or have I got to open it and do something?
newspapers seem full of difficult advice/instructions
why cannot these things sort themselves out...…….I mean windows 10 doesn't even give the option!

Chrome does update itself. But it doesn't automatically do it every day.
It's fairly easy to run the update and unlike Windows update it doesn't monopolise your machine for ages (it takes a couple of minutes) and it doesn't require a reboot. They say to close it then reopen it (I've never come across this as I manually run all updates every morning just after booting up). Here's Google's official page for Chrome updates:
https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95414
The latest version of Chrome for Windows is 72.0.3626.122 - if you've already got that you don't need to do anything.
For those with Android phones, updates are in Play Store as per the normal update procedure.

Both Chrome and Edge can run an ad blocker extension called uBlock Origin, Chrome link here...

Re: Update Google Chrome - active exploit patched
Thanks iaag, a very useful warning there.
I keep my PC running 24/7 and my Chrome instance running at all times with whatever tabs I am working on still open. As far as I can see all that Chrome on Windows does to notify the user that it has just installed an update and wants the user to restart the browser to complete the installation is to change the menu symbol on the far right to a green splodge or something like that. I usually never notice this and only realise there is a Chrome update already downloaded and waiting to complete its installation if I have to restart for some other reason or, very rarely, actually need to go and do something from the Chrome menu.
I really do wish that Chrome had an option to more aggressively remind the user that there is a pending update. I would immediately enable an option if it were offered for Chrome to grey-out my browser window with a “Restart browser now to complete installation of update” message. Obviously I’d want a remind-me-later button if I really was in the middle of something important but making it so easy for people like me to leave critical updates uninstalled for days or even weeks seems highly irresponsible to me when to fix it by more aggressive notification would be quite easy.

Task scheduler could be set up to close/restart chrome on a regular basis.

You mean this sort of thing:

though I'm not entirely clear how you go about making your browser 'managed'.

You'd need to be on Windows 10 pro/enterprise or education to use group policies, install a GPE or go down the registry route if on home.
