Always remembering that some of what it shows is when census taking started in various areas.
And that it totally ignores the first nation peoples.

Indeed, though my guess is that the Native American population densities would not have made a significant difference, it is at least an interesting look at the takeover the USA by the European settlers.

There is a series on PBS America (Freeview 91) called Native America which is indicating much higher numbers than I would have expected. Certainly high enough to show on the lower end of their scale.

Re: Interesting animated map
I am amazed at the significant areas that are still virtually empty although I assume that that is either mountains or desert.
Thanks for that. It seems that against 92 people per square mile for the US, the UK is something like 175.

Unless of course they'd already been largely wiped out by the immigrants by 1790, the start of the animation.

That would seem to be the case - https://www.history.com/news/climate-ch ... g-collapse , although clearly the biggest hits are off the US map.

Dunno. I did not test the veracity of the answer just that when I Googled it the answer for the UK came up at 70 per square kilometre and I get the equivalent in square miles at around 175. It look as though it should be just over 700 per square mile. Sorry about that. Shows how crowded our island is, at least parts of it are considering that there must be many square miles with very few people.

I too thought the UK/US figures you quoted must be incorrect given the large size of the US - e.g. Alaska.
So, going to Wikipedia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_and_dependencies_by_population_density
Gives:
US: 33/Km Sq. or 87/Mi Sq.
UK: 272/Km Sq. 704/Mi Sq.
