Remove wall between toilet / bathroom?

Does what it says on the tin

In this situation, would you remove the dividing wall?

Remove wall between toilet / bathroom?

This is frequently suggested on 'property' programmes as an improvement but is it a good idea where there is only one toilet in the property?

I think I'd be looking to find a place to build a second loo before knocking through. C.

Depends...how many occupants. How many bedrooms? How big is the bathroom? Are you doing this to sell or for yourself?

I used to stay at the Northland's Arms Hotel in Dungannon. If you wanted a room with a bath you were given Room 1, for which Room 1a was the bathroom. However Room 1a also contained a bed, and was often let on its own at times of high demand. It put a different complexion to the term Room with a bath".

Sadly, the IRA blew the Hotel up during the Troubles. It lay between Scotch Street and Irish Street, but the front door and bar were on the former, which may have sealed it's fate.

A typically Irish take on property renovation

I'm surprised this poll has appeared as I made a bit of a hash of writing it but I guess the mods thought it was OK.
I'm not proposing doing it but the suggestion always makes me wonder if it's really a great idea.
I'm pleased the majority agree, that in general it's a bad idea. I really like to do the crossword in peace ! :-)

Larger properties generally tend to have bathrooms with WC's. If a property has 4 or 5 bathrooms or more there is little point in having a separate WC. It's usually smaller properties that have or benefit from having a separate WC.

If your planning on selling then for me personally its nicer to have a single large bathroom rather than a seperate toilet.

You could always keep the wall and put a window in...

Do you do the crossword in the bath or on the toilet?

We moved into a house with one bathroom (no toilet) and a separate toilet next to it. We had one baby at the time and we knocked the wall down. I would almost say it was essential if you had young kids. Much easier to get all the toilet and washing business done in one room.

Knocking down the wall and making good is not necessarily the end of it. Optimising available floorspace can be very important when there's precious little of it to play with. I'm planning refurb of a small bungalow which has long-ish & narrow WC (no hand-basin) next to pokey, loo-less bathroom with each having a 2'3" door (the passing thought of mounting loo-roll holder on back of WC's door amused me). The wall's going so the floor areas can be combined and optimal use made of what's available.

The available floorspace in existing WC has only one use but removing the dividing wall would allow the equivalent area to become shared space (e.g. also designated as standing space for basin) when layout of sanitaryware is reconfigured. As it happens, I plan to create new 2'6" doorway when losing both existing doorways because it allows me better design than retaining either one of the existing.

Cheers!
