Downloaded the 1903 update a couple of days ago. It took a long time to "do its thing" and I had to do a manual restart when it hung (blank screen).

Re: Windows 10 version 1903 'May 2019 Update' now released
I got this last night on Windows Update...
Even though I've got 1809 and 1903 on MCT USB flash drives, I'd held off installing them until I was offered them via Windows Update as I had a feeling there might be some compatibility issues (I never got offered 1809 at all).
It would be handy if MS indicated what the specific issues are rather than pointing to a generic page. I switched from metered to normal connection a while back to allow more telemetry data for MS' machine learning ( although I got offered and installed all updates previous to 1809 whilst on metered, so I'm playing with hunches here).
The Windows 10 May 2019 Update is on its way. We're offering this update to compatible devices, but your device isn't quite ready for it. Once your device is ready, you'll see the update available on this page. There's nothing you need to do at this time.

I pasted the 'not quite ready' message in to a search engine, and found an article saying that, in the case of the authors, windows was baulking at an XPS printer problem. Am currently reloading so can't tell you the page that explained or offered ideas, but I'd recommend doing the same and see where that leads.

It's usually a software incompatibility, some 3rd-party app need to be updated to work in 1903. The most common culprit is a 3rd-party AV.

I might uninstall my old HP Laserjet 6L then (that I never got to work with W10) as I have a newer HP laserjet now that worked first time.

Thanks for that.
AV is Defender, drivers are all up to date apart from some optionals, but there are a few 3rd party monitoring/update apps like Lenovo/HP that might be a bit sluggish on updating to 1903 compatibility.
I'll have a look through the MS list and see if any of my installed SW is/was an issue.

I'd already uninstalled it, so it's not that...

Do you want 1903? If so, why not use the MCT to make the ISO, mount it, then perform an in-place upgrade. It's either going to work or produce a two-part error code that will help diagnose the 'problem area'.
What have you got to lose apart from time? After all, you did say on another thread that....

Re: Windows 10 version 1903 'May 2019 Update' now released
^^ I've also got an 1803 W10 bootable clone drive in addition to my Macrium/File History/cloud backups, so that's not really a big issue.
I've gone the MCT in place upgrade route before, as well as online FU upgrades and MCT clean installs, never had any major problems with any of them.
It's been more of an exercise to see how good MS' telemetry is really, especially as they have ramped up the machine learning recently (apparently).
I was rather hoping they would have got to the stage by now where they could tell you exactly what the compatibility issues are, rather than forcing the user to go an an easter egg hunt in advance or finding out after the feature upgrade what's broken.
Maybe it's a GDPR compliance issue?

Understood. As far as I can tell the MS approach for 1903 is 'ultra-cautious' after they got their fingers burned in the enthusiastic false start for 1809.
For my own part I'm leaving my test machine running 1803 24/7 to see how long it can ignore 1903 before Windows Update installs it automatically. Currently it says the feature update is available with the 'download and install now' option below that (which I'm ignoring).
As of yesterday, MS have stated that the automatic rollout to 1803 machines (and older) has begun....

This issue has now been fixed. The latest MCT will make install media for 1903 build 18363.239 which does not have this problem.

Hi itsallaguess, Recently upgraded my 2 oldish Dell PCs to 1903 using the MCT - all went smoothly, everything is working OK. BUT 1903 does seem a lot SLOWER and less snappy to me. Startup and logon are both visibly slower (so much slower you can visibly see it taking longer), as is the Disk Cleanup tool (that I thought had crashed when I first used it, but it was taking an age adding up the savings on all of the categories of system files for some reason). Now everything is still acceptably fast using an SSD as the operating system disk, but using EXACTLY the same system image and running from a HDD as the operating system disk is close to unusable, much worse than previously).

Portable apps might be worth looking at there then for the future...https://portableapps.com/
