Ranitidine / 'Zantac' and generic

Ranitidine seems to have disappeared from the shelves, both Zantac and generic - I know there was a 'contamination' scare with one brand a while back
What's going on, and when will it be back ?

Important

Supplies of ranitidine are currently very limited. This is due to a possible risk with the ingredients.
Try to speak to your doctor before your ranitidine runs out. There are similar medicines they can prescribe for you if you still need it. In the meantime, keep taking your medicine as usual.
If you have any concerns, speak to your pharmacist or doctor.

There were problems and who knows when they might be resolved.

Zantac/Ranitidine is an H2 antagonist and others are available but the lack of Ranitidine has led to a shortage of those too.

Proton pimp inhibitors (PPIs) do the same thing and many think they are more effective.

Nexium (a PPI) is available OTC.

I have got some Nexium (esomeprazole) but it's not cheap !
6 x ranitidine were available from supermarkets/''saver stores' for less than £1
Nexium was about £6 for 7 tablets (although they are supposed to be effective for a longer period)

Guess I will have to cut down on stuff that gives me acid stomach (cider, onions, mashed potato..) :(

Here's a wheeze, get an appointment with your doctor, explain your symptoms of acid reflux, burning in the oesophagus, waking you in the night with pain in your chest and you'll hopefully come away with a script for a couple of months of one a day Omeprazole for the princely sum of £9.

If I recall correctly it was withdrawn as it was found to contain carcinogenic materials.

Your heartburn may be caused by a hiatus hernia. You can get the Omezaprole on prescription if you have such a hernia.

Such hernias are very common, especially in older people (over 50)

Older?

Early middle age , please :-) I'm only 54

I don't (or didn't) have a hiatus hernia, although I regularly take a hiatus from meaningful work, whilst remaining a paid employee. This is a unilateral thing.
