Poor old pangolins. You get bitten, then you get kidnapped, then you get eaten, and then you get blamed for everything. :(

From wiki:

However, pangolins were eventually ruled out as the definitive source of (SARS-CoV-2), namely being the bridge that the virus used to jump from bats to humans, after it emerged that the 99% match did not actually refer to the entire genome, but to a specific site known as the receptor-binding domain (RBD).[65] A whole-genome comparison found that the pangolin and human viruses share only 90.3% of their DNA (at least 99.8% is needed for a conclusive match)[65]

A bit of a shame really, that's one of the urban myths that might have had a beneficial effect on reducing poaching.
Alternatively they'd be hunted to extinction and the corpses burnt :(

Test kits arrived and first three tests have all proved negative. We are now getting in touch with an NHS worker who was self isolating with all the symptoms but was never tested.

They are not available to the general public. Only for trained healthcare professional use. There are sevral suppliers of similar kits but they are pretty much out of stock. None of these anti-body kits are yet officially recognised by the UK authorities.

Spain have withdrawn some of their testing kits, as they proved to be unreliable -

Like other countries struggling to diagnose and treat the virus, Spain has looked to China for rapid testing kits equipment and much-needed supplies, and announced this week that it would spend €432m on tests, masks, gloves and other personal protective equipment.

However, a batch of Chinese-made kits bought by Spanish health authorities a few weeks ago has been pulled after they were discovered to be unreliable and the Chinese government said that they had been made by a company that did not appear on its list of authorised manufacturers.

In a statement on Thursday, Spain’s health ministry said it would be returning the kits, but stressed that they had not be bought directly from the Chinese manufacturer but from a supply company in Spain that had purchased them in China and had provided the necessary accompanying paperwork.

Which is why the government is insisting on testing their kits before mass usage.

Ours are made in the UK.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has tested positive for coronavirus, the government has said.

Mr Johnson has mild symptoms and will self-isolate in Downing Street, after being tested at No 10 by NHS staff.

"He was tested for coronavirus on the personal advice of England's chief medical officer, Professor Chris Whitty," a statement said.

He will still be in charge of the government's handling of the crisis, the statement added.

On that note, I spoke to someone yesterday who, with 2 of his colleagues are the only ones NOT being furloughed in their organisation (of about 20).

So they have to work, keeping the place together whilst their furloughed workmates get to sit on their [expletive deleted] on 80% pay watching Netflix all day*

Resentment brewing......? Nah, we're all in this together eh?

I appreciate that you would like to think they are the most valued embers of staff and, should the axe come to their jobs in the future, they would receive the proper treatment.

*and no, I don't know what the solution is either.

Perhaps the 18 guys at home can have a whip round for the "heroes".

It is an interesting challenge though.

I guess if they are the only ones with the appropriate skills then it's just tough.

If anyone could do it then I'd have asked for volunteers, some people would rather be in work than stuck at home with family.

If no volunteers then draw straws.

My daughter is taking part in a similar trial but based in Southampton for 0-22 year olds. She received a random invite letter.

An illustration of what can happen with a perfect storm of unfortunate circumstances -

India 'super spreader' quarantines 40,000 people -

Authorities in India have quarantined around 40,000 residents following a coronavirus outbreak linked to one person in Punjab. The 70-year-old man died from COVID-19.

He had ignored advice to self-quarantine after a trip to Italy and Germany, officials told the BBC’s Punjabi service. Upon returning to India, he attended an event to celebrate the holy festival of Hola Mohalla. It attracts around 10,000 people every day.

A week after his death, 19 relatives tested positive for coronavirus. Police have sealed 20 villages near the area where the man stayed to prevent the virus from spreading.

Blasts from the past.
1. I seem to remember that Nobby he of the police is coming close to or has already retired. He was desparate to retire so hope that he managed to escape before coronavirus hit.
2. We now have some unexpected visitors. Some of you will remember the young lady who kept us all amused and envious with stories about herself and husband travelling around Europe in a camper van. I used to copy these stories and pass them on to friends who always talked about doing something similar when they retired. They duly retired last spring, sold their house, bought a camper van and a small flat. Had a call from them the other day, they're trapped in the UK, small flat is driving them mad because they don't have a garden and with the self isolating restrictions can't take their camper van anywhere. They are currently parked down by the duckpond, we've managed to hook them up to electricity and water, there's an outside toilet they can use but they'll have to walk about 600 yds. and of course they've got a loo in the motorholme for nightime emergencies. So far so good. It was lovely to walk down to see them and hold a conversation with another human being, albeit from a safe distance. Fingers crossed it will work out OK.

Sorry, but.....

:D

They are quite right to complain because this border closure nonsense has been particularly stupid. It has probably caused thousands of extra coronavirus cases as people rush to get home and are crowded together in waiting rooms hoping for transport which may, or may not, be scheduled.

What should have happened is that cross-border transport should be slowly running down and sensible preventive measures,(ie wearing masks for all plane passengers and including quarantine where appropriate), put in place immediately for anyone wishing to cross a border.
