My wife and I wen there a few weeks ago for the first time in many years. We had a great time and stayed at a B&B in Shanklin, which was pretty good. Ventor looked nice too. Wasn't particularly impressed with Cowes. Ryde seemed nice if you prefer a bigger town.

I enjoyed several holidays in Sandown - a mile up the road from Shanklin - as a youngster.

But would only stay in Cowes as a last resort. (sorry, couldn't resist)

Its a bit of an open question, depends on what you are interested in seeing and doing.

Seaview, quiet costal village with some amenities and a sailing club.

The centre if you want old houses and being away from the coast

Ventnor if you are a bucket and spade type

Thanks for the info. My friend's husband wants to take her there next year (if all travel OK) for their 40th wedding anniversary as she's always wanted to go. They enjoy walking and just generally sightseeing, not keen on shopping. I'm doing the recce for him in case she spots something on their computer :)

Depends what you like.
The east of the island is more built up, with traditional but busy resorts like Sandown, Shanklin and Ventnor. The west is more empty with scattered villages and open downland etc. If you take a car it is easy to get around, though most roads radiate from Newport, so there is a tendency for traffic holdups there.
IMHO the main 'attractions' are the things to see - Carisbrooke Castle, Osborne House, the IoW steam railway, Needles, St Catherines point being tops. I also like the Undercliff area around Ventnor botanic gardens, and Yarmouth is quaint. Also plenty of sandy beaches, though not many are dog friendly in the summer.
