My own approach has been a mixture of Vanguard Developed World (VEVE) plus Emerging Markets ETFs. In addition I have a mixture of ETFs that are similar to VEVE but a very slightly different mix and a little cheaper.
It would be possible to use the Vanguard US Total Market, a UK regulated OEIC that holds 3,746 stocks, that covers US Large,Mid and Small Caps , a good part of the world small caps and avoids overlaps. The cost is 0.1% ter. I am presently using a mixture of S&P 500, 400 & 600 ETFs and considering the switch as I can now avoid the platform cost penalty.
