It was rather odd viewing the photos. The smartly dressed thief must have been completely unaware he was being recorded. The car took clear pictures of him standing next to it and even one of him pulling stuff out of the car.

It is kind of interesting how cameras in Tesla seem to be able to give good resolution images whereas much of the CCD camera footage I see makes it near impossible to determine the identity of the person photographed. It may be that it is just an inverse square effect, the thief in this case being closer to the cameras that gave a better image of him. Of course it is easy for a thief to disguise themselves and there are electronic disguises that change how a persons face looks at the click of a button via led placed on the person's body and/or clothing.
One can argue that all of this surveillance is a huge blessing for catching thieves but it has civil liberty implications and it is possible to fake evidence or destroy images that are inconvenient. Whether the Downing street parties happened or not could almost certainly be determined by logs of who was in Downing street at the time and also by recorded images, but it seems that only a high ranking civil servant and his/her team may see the logs/images and cynics might suspect that any images released will be of such poor quality that no one can determine who was being photographed.
Still the more Tesla thief activity is broadcast the more thieves are likely to target other makes of car that do not have such tech built in, doing nothing to hurt demand for Tesla cars.
