I've had one of these for years.
Today decided to top up my wife's car as it just does local journeys and never gives the battery a good chance to charge.
I notice that it wasn't charging at the usual rate and that the charger was getting very hot - just about hot enough to hold. I've never noticed this before and as I've had it for a number of years surely would have noticed. I disconnected it at once.
i check the settings and these were OK.
Sounds like it's had it unless anyone can suggest anything.

What, similar to this?
I would say you are right.
I have one I bought in about 2008, and it does not get hot.
I also have a Halfords charger from 1968, still works. That gets quite hot, but by design.

Re: CTEK charger
My CTEK charger was new in Nov 22. It is very quiet and cool in operation.

( I too have 2 old Halfords charger, one orange, one blue. The older orange one buzzes unless you lay it on its back! Both get warm).

Same one -
Quite a bit when I Google on this:
https://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche ... g-hot.html
It seems that it should get warm but not hot

Amazon tells me that I already purchased this...
Not just the charger but the connector leading to the battery was quite hot
Something isn't right. It's not worth the risk so I'll buy another

I wouldn’t jump to that conclusion. They do get warm. I’m assuming you didn’t test the battery voltage before starting the charge? Perhaps the car battery was more discharged than you thought. That’s also consistent with the connector getting hot - suggests the charger’s pushing in a lot of amps.
Try it on another battery. It’s worth excluding the battery as the source of the issue.
As an aside, I love CTEK chargers - have 2! Much more sensible to look after your car batteries with an occasional charge than let them die.

No I didn't test it (wouldn't know how). I moved it and it only just started so I imagine it was pretty low.
I've put it on our other car and will check regularly - good idea, thanks.

Re: CTEK charger
Hi Spet0789
I tried the charger on our other car and it worked OK - it just got warm.
I then put it on the origional car and it was just warm again.
I normally check the car's battery a bit more often but with all the rain haven't done so - a lesson for the future.
Thanks Speo0789 and the other respendents
