Getting to Alexandra Palace

#659

Postby Midsmartin » November 5th, 2016, 10:00 am

Little Ms cou has reached the age where she wants to go to gigs, and she and friend have picked one at Alexandra Palace on a Friday night. It sounds hideous, but Foolishly we said yes. Now, we have two ways of getting there. One is: drive to Peterborough station and leave the car there, train to Kings Cross, then another train to Finsbury Park, and then another on e to A. Palace. Phew. The other is to drive. Neither sound that attractive!

So.. is anyone familiar with getting there by either public transport, or car, on a Friday evening? The venue says they have a fair few parking spaces, but I've no idea how scarce they'd be, or how hard finding other parking might be. It looks an easy route down the A1, but we'd be aiming to arrive around 6-6.30, so traffic may be an issue.

Normally I'd like the idea of getting the train, but having to change twice, and still drive a little way as well seems less appealing. But maybe it'd be less hassle if parking/traffic is likely to be terrible.

Thanks for any tips!

According to the National Rail journey planner, you can catch a train from Peterborough that stops at Stevenage. From Stevenage you get the local train south to Alexandra Palace.

You could leave Peterborough at 16:25 which gets to Stevenage at 16:55 in time for a local train at 16:59 arriving Alexandra Place at 17:41 .

If you travel via Kings Cross, there are direct trains to Alexandra Palace. For example leaving at 16:50 reaches Kings Cross at 17:42 in time for a ,local service at 17:58 reaching AP at 18:08.

From memory of the area, the Alexandra Palace station is at the bottom of a hill with the Palace at the top.

Another plan might be to drive to a commuter station that has direct trains stopping at Alexandra Palace. There should be a reasonably choice as the A1 and A1(M) run parallel to the railway.

Getting back the same night might be more of a challenge, but there appear to be choices that don't involve doubling back via Kings Cross.

Hi,
I live close to Ally Pally. There are 3 car parks in the grounds. There is just one road that goes through the park from Alexandra Park station on the northern perimeter (Muswell Hill/Wood Green) up the hill, past Ally Pally, then down the hill on the other side to the other entrance in Hornsey/Crouch End. Coming from the north - one car park is at the top of the hill right next to Ally Pally on the east side but not that big. Another is a little way down the hill on the other, west, side (The Grove) but very small. The largest is at the bottom of the south side (Hornsey) hill (called Paddock I think), but the entrance is on the left as you go down the hill (not right at the bottom - unless they open the big gates at the bottom) - this one is quite big. However, with this last one, you need to be aware that it is in several sections with lots of trees around it and not very well lit. There might be some personal security issues in the dark if your daughter would be walking back to the car on her own, albeit with lots of other people around. There have been some incidents around there before even during day time.

However, if I were you, I would try and park in the residential streets on the north-west side. There is an entrance into the park on Dukes Avenue and then it's a very short walk up to Ally Pally. I am pretty sure there are no parking restrictions on all those roads.

That brought back memories - I used to live just off Tottenham Lane (near Konk Studios, familiar to music fans!)
I'd walk up to Ally Pally occasionally: nice views (and a pub)

Correct, it's no more than a 10 minute walk. And there is a decent pub right there called the Starting Gate, if you have to wait for a train.

By train ; Peterborough to Finsbury Park . Then by W3 bus right to Alexandra Palace. No need for 2 trains and 2 changes.

I cant seem to find anything on the set lists for each of the shows used for Ally Pally Paradiso...
Does anyone have a link to the audio for both shows in full?
Thanks
