Ouch!

A couple of foxes arrived on our lawn this afternoon, and started making baby foxes as they do at this time of the year. And 30 minutes later, despite much tugging and trying to separate, they are still locked together. Looks really painful

Yes, it can happen.....

While copulatory ties do not always occur, when they do they can last anywhere from a couple of minutes to more than an hour (90 minutes is the longest I have come across in the literature).

They finally separated after 40 minutes.

Are you saying you tried to tug the male fox off?

I remember this happening to a couple of dogs down our road. I was about ten at that time, and found it quite worrying. Now I think further, it was the back to back thing that I found quite disturbing as it seemed so painful.

Yep, I've seen that too with dogs. (The female toddled off quite happily after the encounter, but the male licked his plainly painful apparatus for a couple of days.) But with some animals, notably cats, it's all part of nature's design. A cat's todger has spines (of a sort), which are there to make separation difficult. It all gives the semen more time to find its mark. :)

Thanks to the wonders of Google, I now know that the spines serve a more fun purpose. With lady cats, apparently, if it doesn't feel good the conception won't happen. They require a bit of a thrill before they "initiate the oocyte release" that opens up the thingummy and lets the umm, process begin.

I suppose this may explain why kittens born in a single litter will often have two or more fathers. Once a she-cat gets started, she's anybody's for several days at a time. Oooh-ocyte.
