Is this behaviour seen on a PC/laptop computer or a mobile phone? On my phone, Youtube videos are muted by default.
Either way, is there a graphic of a loudspeaker with a line through it? if so, the sound is muted so clicking on the icon will turn the sound on.

Re: no sound from U tube clips
Strangely, that happened to me a couple of weeks ago. Everything on the PC worked fine, except for sound on Youtube. Sound on other applications was OK. Tried everything I could think of to fix it, then finally decided to reboot. It all worked fine after that. No idea what had happened, haven't seen that problem before or since.

I've never had a problem hearing YouTube videos, so I went to the Daily Mail to have a look - sure enough there was no sound.
Turns out the Daily Mail site sets the sound as muted by default. Just click the speaker icon beneath the video to enable sound, doing so also lets you set your preferred volume.

I have tested the Daily Mail in Edge, Firefox and IE. The behaviour is identical in all three. Here's an innocuous page (by DM standards) you can test this on...

...once the page has loaded, scroll down until you get past the video. Once the video scrolls off the top of the page it jumps off the page and plays in the bottom right corner of the browser. The sound is always muted until you click on its speaker icon.

Hi,
I think this is a new Youtube "feature". Pop-up or embedded youtube videos always default to muted. It's to stop annoying embedded videos (and ads) auto-running and blasting out audio when you are at work
This was added by youtube a few months ago. There was a message about it if you are a youtube subscriber. But of course, it affects you even if you are not.

Re: no sound from U tube clips
If you want to block embedded videos completely (they are stealing your bandwidth and slowing page loads after all) then you can get HTML5 video blocker extensions for Chrome et al.
I use 'Disable HTML5 Autoplay' (I've just checked and this is no longer being supported by the developer, hopefully it doesn't become a security risk itself by being bought out by a nefarious 3rd party...So I've swapped out for the reloaded version, see the link).
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/sear ... e-ntp-icon
Flash is still used but much less so and can be blocked/disabled from within browser settings.
No doubt the posters here who use HOSTS will have their solutions too...
