Ant Killer

Can anyone recommend an ant killer that works? We have a problem with ants nests around the house and garden this year. I have tried a couple of powder products but they don't work.

This may be worth a try. It is very effective on wasp nests.

Permethrin-based killers such as Nippon or Raid have always done the job for us. Some are so attractive to the ants that they'll carry the powder back to the nest, which makes your job a lot easier. :D

Permethrin is a pyrethroid which is derived from marigolds, I believe. You can buy it in boxes that will keep it tidily out of sight and away from children, although we've never needed to go that far.

I never found anything that works well in the garden. I tried loads of stuff but in the end, I realised that in any case, they don't always come back the next year.

On the exterior wall, I use a spray to kill the ants. It works very well.

In the house or around windows, there is a very simple solution. Every time you see a column of ants, simply wipe them up with a damp cloth and flush down the toilet. Do this for a few days. They leave a scent, follow each other, and when the column is disrupted, they look for somewhere else.

I've had very good results for many years using 'Ant Stop', shown here in an earlier ant-related thread -

https://www.lemonfool.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=35070&p=512673&hilit=ant#p512673

I used to get it from Wilko for a much lower price, but the tub lasts for years, and is worth seeking out if you can find a price you're happy with. It doesn't take many granules for it to work well.

Cheers,

We use an Aardvark.

To be fair, it was the first one that came up when we searched.

Of course, a little Aardvark never hurt anyone (though it might hurt a few ants)

Reminds me of that old joke....

Q... What do you call an aardvark that refuses to get involved in fights in pubs?"

A... A vark

The Pemethrin based products work for me. If I do not intervene, the ants can make an awful mess of the lawn, making it very uneven & difficult to mow.

I have successfully used some organic products on the veg plot as well, but I haven't seen these on sale recently.

If ants are in the garden I'm not bothered, but if they seem to be getting too close to the house I have used ANTSTOP! Bait Stations (from Sainsbury). They seems to work.
